Assyrier Utan Gränsers resa i Irak har nått sitt slut. Syftet med denna resa har varit att utföra en förstudie som är finansierad av Forum syd. En förstudie innebär att samla in information av lokala aktörer om vilka behov som finns för att möjliggöra för framtida projekt. Vi studerade även omgivningen och levnadsvillkoren bland målgruppen som förstudien avser. Vi har därför bland annat konsulterat med vår lokala samarbetspartner, Assyrian Aid Society in Iraq, om vilka de primära behoven anses vara bland de interna flyktingarna och verksamheter som bedrivs lokalt av/för målgruppen.
Vi träffade även sex representanter från Assyrian Women Union i Dohuk, assyriska kvinnoförbundet, som arbetar för att stärka assyriska kvinnors självmakt genom att skapa bland annat arbetstillfällen och rum för samtal, aktiviteter och gemenskap. Sist träffade vi Chaldoassyrian Student and Youth Union som är ett ungdomsförbund med flera tiotal lokalföreningar över hela Irak. Ungefär 20 unga medlemmar deltog i en workshop som Assyrier Utan Gränser höll. Viktiga och givande samtal delades sinsemellan under båda mötena.
Slutligen besökte vi även den assyriska skolan Akitu som ligger i Dohuk (Nohadra). Här går ungefär 280 elever från årskurs 1 – 6 där alla ämnen ges på assyriska förutom språklektionerna. När vi besökte skolan delade vi även ut Humble Brush tandborstar. Det gjordes till två olika klasser och vi lämnade även en del tandborstar till resterande elever på skolan.
Vårt första intryck när vi klev in i skolan och gick genom skolans korridorer, var att det är väldigt kallt. Rektorn som senare satte sig med oss, berättade att de har bekymmer med temperaturen inomhus. På sommaren är det för varmt då det inte finns möjlighet att kyla ner klassrummen medan det på vintern blir alldeles för kallt. Rektorn menade att detta bekymmer kan hindra eleverna från att kunna koncentrera sig under sin skoltid.

ASSYRIANS WITHOUT BORDERS IN IRAQ
Assyrians Without Borders trip to Iraq has now reached its end. The purpose of this trip was to conduct a feasibility study, funded by the swedish organisation Forum Syd, that involves gathering information from local stakeholders on the needs in the local communities amongst our target group. We also studied the surroundings and living conditions among the target group that the feasibility study concerns to enable future projects in Iraq. We consulted with our local partner, Assyrian Aid Society in Iraq, on which the primary needs are amongst the internal refugees and about the activities that are conducted locally by / for the target group in Irak.
We also met with six representatives of the Assyrian Women Union in Dohuk who works to empower women by creating job opportunities and spaces for activities. Lastly, we met with Chaldoassyrian Student and Youth Union, that has several dozen local associations across Iraq. Approximately 20 young members participated in a workshop that Assyrians Without Borders held. We had many fruitful discussions with both organizations.
Finally, we also visited an Assyrian school, Akitu, located in Dohuk (Nohadra). Here goes about 280 students, where all the subjects taught to the students are done in the Assyrian language, except other language modules. When we visited the school we also distributed toothbrushes donated by Humble Brush. This was made to two different classes and then we left some toothbrushes to the remaining students at the school.
Our first impression when we stepped into the school and went through the school hallways, was that it is very cold inside. The headmistress, who later sat down with us, told us that they have great trouble with the indoor temperature. During the summer, it is too hot whilst it is too cold during the winter because there is shortage of gas available to the school for their oil heating systems. The headmistress expressed concern about that this prevents the children from concentrating during class.
We had similar conversations when we visited refugee camps and during the different meetings with local stakeholders.
