Assyrier Utan Gränsers projekt för läkarhjälp till flyktingarna i Nohadra med omnejd har nu pågått i några veckor. Dr Meleks hemlandsfond har gett en gåva på 110 000 kr samt arbetat hårt för att andra ska skänka vilket inbringade ytterligare 60 000 kr i gåvor till projektet.
Ordföranden för stiftelsen Dr Meleks hemlandsfond i Sverige, Rabita Kerimo, har sedan tidigare haft kontakt med Assyrier Utan Gränser för att ta reda på vilket sätt som fonden kan vara med och hjälpa i krigets Syrien och Irak. Sagt och gjort – Assyrier Utan Gränser presenterade läkarhjälpens projekt som väl sammanfaller med fondens intentioner och stadgar. Styrelsen för Dr Meleks hemlandsfond tog därefter beslutet att finansiera köpet av minibussen. Rabita Kerimos (och övriga i styrelsen för fonden) ihärdiga arbete har nu inneburit att hela 170 000 kr har kommit in i gåvor till läkarhjälpen! Fonden, inklusive företag som brukar skänka pengar till fonden, kommer att finansiera köpet av minibussen!
Rabita, arbetar till vardags som projektledare för ”Ikoro”, som är en dagverksamhet för äldre assyrier i Södertälje. Hennes engagemang och starka vilja att förändra och gå mot en modernare och ljusare framtid för assyrierna i Sverige och ursprungsländerna är vida känd. Hon har sedan några år tillbaka varit ordförande för stiftelsen Dr Meleks hemlandsfond, som bl.a. ger stöd och gåvor till assyrier och föreningar i ursprungsländerna. Förutom detta ges även utmärkelse till förening eller privatperson som utför goda gärningar. Bland annat mottog Assyrier Utan Gränser år 2010 en utmärkelse om 25 000 kr av fonden.
Fonden har nu funnits i snart 20 år och skapades efter assyriern Dr Melek Kavakcioglus (Besara) hastiga bortgång 1996. Dr Melek gick bort blott 46 år gammal. Hans familj med vänner, assyriska föreningen i Södertälje och St Jacob av Nsibin Syrisk ortodoxa kyrkan i Södertälje skapade denna fond å hans minne. Dr Melek var känd för sitt arbete för assyrierna i diasporan och i ursprungsländerna, men även för sin ödmjukhet och viljan att förändra. Han var en av få assyrier i Turkiet som fick möjligheten att studera vidare och blev läkare i slutet av 1970-talet. Hans arbete för fred och rättvisa föranledde till att han i början av 1980-talet tvingades fly från Turkiet. Han hamnade i Sverige och fortsatte arbeta som läkare och hade olika uppdrag i Sverige – men även internationellt för bland andra svenska biståndsorganet SIDA.
Rabita menar att gåvan till läkarhjälpen är viktig och visar för den lilla människan att vi bryr oss. ”Om man med läkarhjälpen kan få ett flyktingbarn att överleva misär och sjukdomar är det värt varenda gåva och krona som kommer flyktingarna till godo”
Insamlingen för Assyrier Utan Gränsers läkarhjälp för flyktingarna från Mosul och Ninevehslätten som bor i Nohadra med omnejd pågår för fullt! Projektet är tänkt att i ett första skede pågå under 6 månader. Minst 8 500 familjer har flytt till Nohadra och det handlar således om minst 40 000 flyktingar som har ett stort behov av läkarhjälpen. Det är långt att ta sig ut till närmaste sjukhus eller vårdcentral och många av flyktingarna har ett stort behov av att nås ut med mediciner och läkare. För att nå ut till dessa flyktingar kommer en minibuss utrustad med läkarutrustning att köpas in. Minibussen kommer att köra runt byarna för att nå ut till dessa flyktingar.

Dr Melek´s Homeland Fund and other organizations make 170 000 kr donation to the medical assistance project of Assyrians Without Borders in Iraq
The medical assistance project organized by Assyrians Without Borders for the benefit of the refugees in Nohadra and surrounding areas has now been going on for some weeks. Dr. Melek´s Homeland Fund has made a donation of 110 000 kr and also worked hard to raise money from other organizations, resulting in an additional 60 000 kr in contributions to the project.
The Chairman of the foundation Dr. Melek´s Homeland fund in Sweden, Rabita Kerimo, already has longstanding contacts with Assyrians Without Borders to explore the ways in which the fund can help contribute to the victims of the war in Iraq and Syria. And from there it all started – Assyrians Without Borders presented the medical assistance project which is also very much in line with the intentions and statutes of the fund.The board of Dr. Melek´s Homeland Fund subsequently took the decision to finance the purschase of a mini van. The hard work of Rabita Kerimo and the other board members has now resulted in an impressive total of 170 000 in contributions to the medical assistance project! The fund, including companies that are regular contributors, will cover the costs for the mini van!
Rabita has her professional career at ”Ikoro”, a day center for senior Assyrians in Södertälje where she is project leader. Her commitment and strong will to bring about positive change and a brigthter future for Assyrians in Sweden and their countries of origin is well known to all. Since a few years back, she is heading Dr Melek´s Homeland Fund, which among other things provides support and donations to individual Assyrians and Assyrian associations in the countries of origin. In addition to this, awards are given out to particularly deserving associations or private individuals. For instance, Assyrians Without Borders received a 25 000 award in 2010.
The fund has now existed for close to 20 years and was created following the untimely death of the Assyrian Dr. Melek Kavakcioglus in 1996. At the time of his passing, Dr. Melek was only 46 years old. His family and friends, the Assyrian Association in Södertälje and the Syrian Orthodox Church of St. Jacob of Nsibin created the fund in his memory. Dr. Melek was known for his work for Assyrians in the diaspora and and in the countries of origin, but also for his humility and will to bring about change. He was one of the very few Assyrians in Turkey who was given the opportunity to study and became a doctor in the late 70s. Because of his work for peace and justice, he had to flee Turkey in the early 80s. He ended up in Sweden and continued to work as a doctor, holding various posts – but also worked internationally for the Swedish aid agency SIDA.
Rabita says that the donation to the medical assistance project is very important and will show the refugees that we care. ”If the medical assitance project will help refugee children to survive hardship and disease, it is worth every penny given to the refugees”.
Intensive work is currently under way to raise money for the medical assitance project of Assyrians Without Borders among the refugees from Mosul and Nineveh, now residing in Nohadra!
The project is intended, in its first phase, to last for 6 months. At least 8500 families have fled to Nohadra, meaning that at least 40 000 refugees are in urgent need of medical assistance. It is a long and ardous way to the nearest hospital or clinic and many of the refugees urgently need to be reached by medicine and doctors. In order to reach out to these refugees a mini van fully eqipped for medical purposes will be bought. The mini van in question will travel between the villages to reach as many refugees as possible.
